The high speeds were achieved because the ships were slim and relatively small, but had a very large sail area.

A 'kogge' is a ship introduced by the Hanseatic League to transport goods and was developed from the Viking ship. The 'kogge' was built on a straight keel and stems and had a full or partial deck. There was a single square-rigged sail, on a mast placed amidships. A 'kogge' could transport a lot of freight and was very successful in the period from about 1200 to about 1450.
